So much like Joni Mitchell’s style when she was in her early Jazz period, this song explains “I guess love is rare” and asks, “Is love ever fair?”

Each of the 3 verses portrays a different love interest (there’s Randy, Robert and Michael) and each guy has very desirable qualities, but the singer sees “ice in my veins” and “no sparks in the air”. On the bridge of the song, the singer laments that she’s “been in love before, and cried — I wasn’t the one who walked away… like sand in my hand, love wouldn’t stay.” This Joni Mitchell-influenced song also employs an acoustic guitar Bb tuning which is Joni’s as well. Paige recorded an instrumental version of this song on the Wolfe and Powell CD,  “Cappuccino Music”.

I Tried To Love You

words and music by Paige Powell                      ©2015 Paige E. Powell

Intro: Oooo... I guess love is rare, Oooo... is love ever fair?

1. Randy liked to talk of books, but his hungry looks scared me away
A talented man, I always thought, but I never got to know him that way
Now he lives in Beverly Hills with directing skills on movies you’ve known
On movie credits his name rolls by the same way I left it alone

Chorus: I tried to love you. I guess love is rare
I tried to love you, but love isn’t fair
I tried to love you — No sparks in the air
I tried to love you, but love wasn’t there

2. Robert was a physicist and when we kissed there was no flame
Robert looked like Redford too, and his high I.Q. earned him fame
He had offers from institutes of great repute for his brains
I couldn’t believe that he wanted me, for I could see was ice in my veins
(Oh, no!)

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:  Now, I’ve been in love before and cried
I wasn’t the one who walked away
I thought the relationship was right, oh, so right
Like sand through my hand, love wouldn’t stay, stay, stay
(Michael, Michael)

3. Michael was so civilized. He socialized and liked to bring me
Amazingly, he didn’t care for sports or sports reports on or off TV
Touching me gently all the time, he’d remind me, I’m only human too
His kisses could make me forget my name
But love’s great game was long overdue — Oh, no!

(Repeat Chorus)
