v

Blackeyed Peas

words and music by Paige Powell     ©1989 Paige E. Powell

1. I don’t need no blackeyed peas on New Year’s Eve

I don’t need no blackeyed peas on New Year’s Eve

I don’t need no blackeyed peas.

Just hand me that Bible, please

I will put my trust into the Lord.

2. I don’t need predictions or astrology

I don’t need predictions, don’t need astrology

I don’t need no new predictions.

The Bible gives me the best convictions

I will put my trust into the Lord.

Bridge: I’m not afraid of crystal-ball gypsies

Or the crazy fortunes they’ll contrive

I’m not afraid of what the tarot cards say

‘Cause Jesus really is alive!

3. I don’t need no four-leaf clover, not a lucky star

I don’t need no four-leaf clover, not a lucky star

I don’t need no four-leaf clover,

‘Cause my life will soon be over

I’ll be glad I trusted in the Lord.

Bridge: I never fear the hiding darkness

When demons make their noises, I’ll be brave

Halloween and black cats cannot scare me

God said, “Jesus come out of your grave!”

4. I don’t need no blackeyed peas on New Year’s Eve

I don’t need no blackeyed peas on New Year’s Eve

I don’t need no blackeyed peas.

Just hand me that Bible, please

I will put my trust into the Lord!

I will put my trust into the Lord!

I will put my trust into the Lord!

Gutsy rock and blues song tells the listener what “I don’t need…” in the form of superstitious good-luck charms, rather, “I will put my trust into the Lord.”

Aren’t you supposed to cook blackeyed peas for New Year’s? Yes, it’s for good luck, along with “a four-leaf clover” or a “lucky star.” Exploring all the things we could trust in, Paige declares an absence of fear, putting her trust in the Bible and in the Lord, “…’cause Jesus really is alive!” Paige sings, “Just hand me that Bible, please” and “Halloween and black cats cannot scare me.” Recorded in 1989, lead guitar is performed brilliantly by Todd Cornett. Bluesy harmonica is performed by Brian D. McLaren, founding pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church and well-known author.
