Lift My Heart
words and music by Paige Powell © 2015 Paige E. Powell
1. When you held my hand for the first time
I thought my smile would just explode
Into silly laughs like a schoolgirl
But you kept smilin’ and my tension slowed
Pre-Chorus: I’m level-headed most the time
But common sense left my mind
Chorus: When you kiss me, how you lift my heart,
High as it can get
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Like a sonic jet
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart!
2. Having dinner in is a great start
I keep the thrills down deep inside
Such excitement in what is coming
Gigantic feelings that I’ve got to hide
Pre-Chorus: So level-headed once before
My common sense walks out the door
Chorus: When you kiss me, how you lift my heart!
I can barely speak
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
And my knees are weak
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart!
Bridge: Love is risky like a starship ride
I’m just a cosmonaut in space
There was no place to stand, no solid ground
I’ve landed into your embrace
3. Like a little kid who’s excited
My heart’s the one who isn’t wise
Tell my beating heart to be careful
My memory warns it not to fantasize
Pre-Chorus: So level-headed yesterday
My common sense now flies away
Chorus: When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Like a sunny day
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
And I melt away
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Hey, it starts to race
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Into outer space
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Like a rocket ride
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart
Hey, I almost died!
When you kiss me, how you lift my heart!
This is a fun, positive, happy song that climbs and soars (and dives a little) just like a heart when it’s in love! In lively 6/8 time, the lyrics describe a woman’s dating experience, “like a schoolgirl” with her heart described as a separate entity, “like a little kid who’s excited!” There’s a pre-chorus about being “level-headed” but having “common sense” that “walks out the door” when it comes to love. The chorus describes the many ways a kiss can Lift My Heart, including right into outer space, where “there’s no place to stand, no solid ground” as the bridge tells us. Written on the guitar using an alternate Bb tuning, many of the chord changes are surprising. The last chorus climbs with a climaxing bass line at the end.
