Love Is Patient

music by Paige Powell, lyrics from I Corinthians 13:4–8a

Love is patient …      and kind.

It does not envy or boast. It is not proud or rude

Love is patient …      and kind.

It does not envy or boast. It is not proud or rude

Love does not insist on its own way

It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth!

Love does not insist on its own way

It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth!

It always protects, always believes . . .

(Repeat from beginning)

Always hopes, always perseveres

Love never fails, love never fails

Love never fails, love never fails (repeat)

Creating a song from these famous Biblical passages in 1 Corinthians, chapter 13 was challenging, but when I wrote the music, I wanted to match the meaning of the words. The melody goes down on words like "evil" and up on words like "truth".

Read aloud at weddings, “the love chapter” located in 1Corinthians: 13 has always been inspiring about the true, selfless nature of real love. This song begins with verse 4: “Love is patient and kind. It does not envy or boast, it is not proud or rude.” Some marriages have been saved with contemplation of the next verse, “[love] keeps no record of wrongs” when some people realize that they have indeed been keeping a mental list of wrongs by their spouse. "Love Is Patient" builds to a crescendo with, “… [love] rejoices with the truth!” and after repeating the entire song, ends with “Love never fails.” Is it true?
