Thinner Than Water

words and music by Paige Powell    © 2014 Paige E. Powell

1. You wanna be free for all the lovers you can have
But darlin’ the thrill is gone soon as you go
So, just say, “No”
You’ve got to stick with just one lover
Give precious love a chance to grow, a chance to grow

Chorus: You spread yourself thinner than water
There’s nothin’ left for me when you’re through
But I can’t be just half a woman
I’ve got to have all of you, all of you, all of you

2. How can you say you’re satisfied
In the arms of a new lover with no name?
I would love you better than all of them put together
Like breath on fire, blown to flame

(Chorus)

3. In this world ya gotta depend on somethin’
You need a love that’s gonna last
‘Cause time, time will catch up to you
And it’ll turn you around so fast, way too fast

(Chorus)

Tag:  All of you, all of you, all of you...

Wailing the blues in a slow, driving 3/4 time (like “A Natural Woman”), this features Paige playing her rarely-played electric guitar with Steve Wolfe playing an emotional, screaming saxophone.

“You spread yourself thinner than water” the female singer wails to an unfaithful man, pleading, “I can’t be just half a woman — I gotta have all of you!” She tries to reason with him because “time will catch up to you and it’ll turn you around so fast”. Steve Wolfe does a masterful job of adding an emotional, screaming, wailing saxophone to the blues melody. The tempo and meter is similar to “A Natural Woman” by Carole King, made popular by Aretha Franklin, and it is also influenced by Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You”.
