Two Things At Once
words and music by Paige Powell ©2007 Paige E. Powell
1. I can pick up the mail after taking out the trash
I can whistle a song, cookin’corned beef hash
Talk about the weather while I eat a little lunch
But I can’t do more than two things at once
2. I can answer the door when I’m talkin’on the phone
Listen to the news while I’m drivin’home
Change my schedule when I’m in a time crunch
But I can’t do more than two things at once
Bridge 1: If I juggle many tasks, I’ll start dropping a few
‘Cause the number of things I can do
At the same time is only two!
3. I can talk about the future of you and me
While I hold your hand and share the dreams I see
I’ll write you a song and say I love you a bunch
But I can’t do more than two things at once
Bridge 2: You want me to do so much and I love pleasing you
But the number of things I can do
At the same time is only two!
4. I can play this guitar while I sing to you
About the days I was searchin’for a love this true
And I finally found you while everybody else hunts
But I can’t do more than two things at once
No, not more than two things at once
No, I can’t do more than two things at once, darlin’!
On this recording, Saxophone is performed by Steve Wolfe.
Vocal harmonies on the bridge performed by Richard Czypinski.
In my humble opinion, you can listen the radio while driving, right? You can cook something while listening to music. But as the song says, "I can play this guitar while I sing to you..." and I must admit that once, while singing and playing a song I had memorized, I thought about what kind of pizza I wanted to order. Hmmm... that's three things, right? I guess you could argue that my brain was on "autopilot" when performing the song, freeing it to think about pizza, so that's one thought at a time.
The real treat in the recording of this song is the saxophone performance of Steve Wolfe, who unfortunately for our local music community, moved away to Jacksonville, Florida. Richard Czypinski, who has loaned his vocals on some of my songs to pitch to male artists, was available and happy to add background vocals on the bridges of "Two Things At Once". From Blog, June 25, 2021: The Story Behind the Song, "Two Things At Once":
Ahh, the simple life! Well, no, not for my busy schedule! Life can be so exciting with the fun things that I'd rather do plus the things I'm supposed to do! So, to maximize the use of my time, I do try to do "Two Things At Once" and I wrote a song about it.
After writing it, I brought it to a songwriter group for their feedback, and don't you know, they ARGUED with me that women, especially, can multi-task doing 3 or 4 things at once. Later, I read about a study where a bunch of scientists found that we really only do one thing at a time. We may shift back and forth between two activities, but our brains only focus on one thing at a time. Oh well! At least I got a good song from the idea and you guys can argue about it amongst yourselves.
